Does Uddingston contain some of the best schools in Scotland?
For many people, the calibre of local schooling is a key factor in deciding where to live. It’s one of the key reasons East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire have some of Scotland’s highest average house prices. Some of the best schools in Scotland, like Boclair Academy and Mearns Castle, are located in suburbs whose homes now command significant premiums.
Parents often focus on these two affluent satellite counties on Glasgow’s fringes, without considering the fact other towns may also host some of the best schools in Scotland. Uddingston’s educational facilities have attracted families from far and wide, and it would be remiss of Living in Uddingston not to outline the educational prospects for Uddingston’s younger residents…
The main primary school in Uddingston Village is Muiredge Primary, which traces its origins back to 1897. The original red sandstone building (designed to blend in with the surrounding villas and tenements) still forms the centrepiece of a campus which was successfully extended in 2015. Muiredge hosts over 320 pupils and 40 nursery-age children, and is renowned locally for supporting children with additional needs.
Non-denominational primary schools in Uddingston’s North Lanarkshire suburbs include Aitkenhead and Tannochside Primary Schools, situated a mile apart. Aitkenhead serves the sprawling Calderbraes estate of post-war bungalows and dormer villas, while Tannochside Primary nestles between Tannochside and Viewpark – again, surrounded on two sides by modern family homes. Aitkenhead opened in 1988 and the Tannochside campus reopened in 2006 to cater for 400 pupils. Unlike many of the best schools in Scotland, this is current well below its capacity of 565. That means Tannochside’s ongoing expansion will be comfortably accommodated, with Taylor Wimpey among the builders active in this suburb of Uddingston.
Uddingston’s Catholic population benefit from St John the Baptist Primary School in the Village, occupying a modern single-storey campus along North British Road, and flanked by one of several modern housing estates built since the Millennium. Across the motorway, John Paul II Catholic Primary serves Uddingston’s North Lanarkshire suburbs, from another well-designed modern campus.
The current Uddingston Grammar School campus opened in 2009, having outgrown its Victorian roots in a red sandstone building which has since been converted into luxury apartments. The new campus stands beside the River Clyde, with a catchment area including the whole of Uddingston and Bothwell. Uddingston Grammar’s motto Virtute Crescam (Growing in Excellence) seems appropriate for a school whose pupil roster presently stands at over 1,150. South Lanarkshire Council’s Vision Impairment Service is based here, and Uddingston Grammar School even has its own Android and iOS apps for parents and pupils to use.
Families wanting to send their child to a high quality independent school in Scotland can consider Hamilton College, established back in 1983 and located beside Hamilton Racecourse, five minutes from Uddingston. A new Chaplaincy service was recently introduced at the school, which currently has over 400 pupils ranging from three to 18 years of age. Hamilton College ranks as one of the top ten independent schools in the country for Advanced Highers, while in 2019, 92.8% of Higher results ranged from A to C. The majority of College pupils go onto study STEM subjects at university.
